Dear friends of Otorongo!
This is a website dedicated to modern and still authentic shamanism, a religious system of healing.
Why religious? Because it refers to our roots, the roots of everybody. Shamanism reveals our link to
the infinite, and the infinite is everything. It brings us back, or better, it brings us through,
through the barriers of death, and that's why shamanism is religious.
Otorongo is located in the deep Amazon jungle of Peru, about 10 kilometers far from the border of the
great Amazon river and a small town of 6.000 souls there, called Tamshiyacu. It's an eremitage,
a spiritual resort and perhaps healing center. Otorongo is focused on personal, intimate encounters
with the spirit of shamanism. It's more then the local "curanderismo", the local system of
healing, which is based on handling plants and spirits of this magnificent rainforest, although the
master-curanderos working in Otorongo are brought up in that local environment. But you will find
references to other practices of "sorcery" as well, as for instance the understanding of
mexican indians and that of their brothers from the Great Plains. But the eremitage in the same way
is based on Christian and Buddhist elements. It's open for everybody with good intent.
And why "eremitage"? Because it's far from civilization's noise. There is no electricity.
There are no roads, no cars. It's deep virgin-jungle with wild beasts, such as the jaguar
(the "Otorongo", as the locals call the cat), the anaconda, the alligator, monkeys and a
hole zoo more, very near to where we sleep. In the dark of the forest-night the air becomes burbling,
always filled with the appetizing vibrations of the zikades, till the moment when we wake up.
So it's awakening. Awakening by means of exercises: Dieting, taking medical plants, celebrating
sacred Ayahuasca-ceremonies. Walks through the jungle. Meditating within the wilderness, alone.
Speaking with animals, spirits and one self. Getting close to foolishness. Concentration and
spiritual work - cleansing work - that's what an eremitage is for. Otorongo will be home. Private,
intimate home. Home for refugees, for a while or forever. Forever?
